There are many options to research when you’re considering vision correction. But one possibility is especially exciting.

Refractive lens exchange or RLE is one of the most popular vision procedures you probably have never heard about. Keep reading to learn more about RLE and find out if it is right for you!

RLE Basics

The name refractive lens exchange is pretty self-explanatory if you know what it means. The basic concept of RLE is to exchange your natural lens for an artificial lens called an IOL.

IOL is short for an intraocular lens, and IOLs come in a variety of options. They range from basic or standard IOLs that provide eyesight at one specific distance to premium options that can give you a full range of vision.

Monofocal IOLs are the standard IOL option. They are usually covered by insurance and Medicare, but you may still need to use glasses with them.

If your interest in RLE is an alternative to LASIK, then monofocal IOLs aren’t for you. Premium IOLs, however, can be just as effective as LASIK for some people.

And there are numerous types of premium IOLs to choose from. Multifocal IOLs can provide quality vision at all ranges. They refract light differently depending on how it hits the lens, similar to bifocal glasses.

Accommodating IOLs are a bit more sophisticated. They move inside your eye and mimic the movement of your natural lens using your eye muscles.

Toric IOLs are custom-made for people with astigmatism to counteract their corneal irregularities. These are just some of the many premium IOL options.

Choosing an IOL is an essential step in the RLE journey. Your eye doctor will help you select the best one for you based on your lifestyle and vision goals!

How Does RLE Work?

First, your surgeon numbs your eyes with anesthetic eye drops. Then they create an incision in the cornea that allows them to break apart your natural lens and remove it with light suction.

Once your natural lens is out, they replace it with the IOL that you selected. The IOL goes into the membrane that held your natural lens.

Stitches are not required during RLE. The tissue reattachs and heals itself over a short period.

Why Choose RLE?

RLE and LASIK are both vision correction procedures. So why get RLE instead of LASIK?

RLE is an alternative to LASIK since not everybody is a good candidate for LASIK. LASIK has strict requirements to ensure it is safe and effective.

One of those requirements is corneal thickness. LASIK requires thick corneas because it removes corneal tissue to correct your vision.

RLE does not reshape your corneas. So if you have thin corneas, RLE may be a better option for you than LASIK.

The only way to know which refractive procedure is best for you is to have a vision correction consultation. Schedule an appointment at Stahl Eyecare Experts in Garden City, NY, to find out!
