You’ve been approved for LASIK, and you are counting down the days to your procedure. You can’t just count down the days and show up, though. You need to do a few things to prepare for the procedure. These simple tips will ensure that you are ready to go when you arrive at your New York City eye surgeon’s office.
Stop Wearing Your Contacts
Your contacts change the shape of your cornea, so you have to stop wearing them before the procedure. If you wear soft lenses, take them out at least a week before surgery. Stop wearing your toric lenses for three weeks prior to the surgery, and gas permeable lenses need to stay out of your eyes for a few months.
In addition, if you tend to sleep in your contacts, stop doing that for a minimum of three weeks before your surgery. This will give your corneas ample time to go back to normal. That will improve your outcome with LASIK.
Get Your Eyes Ready for the Procedure
You want your eyes to be completely clear of debris when you go in for your surgery. Start this process the night before by removing all of the makeup around your eyes. Then, flush your eyes with artificial tears. This will ensure that your eyes are in the best shape possible when you go in the next morning. Finally, when you wake up the next day, don’t put any makeup on.
Don’t Get a Morning Cup of Coffee
You might like to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, but don’t drink one the morning of LASIK. Caffeine causes eyes to dry out, which can lead to discomfort during the procedure. You will feel much better if you stick to water the day of your procedure.
Wear Warm Clothes to the Office
The laser suite can get cold, so you need to dress warmly. Put on warm and comfortable clothes for your procedure so you won’t be chilly. That way, you can sit back and relax during the procedure.
Eat a Little Food
Unlike most surgeries, you can eat before LASIK. You don’t want to get overly full, but eating a light snack will ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure. Eat something healthy that will hold you over during the procedure.
Find a Driver
You won’t be able to drive home after LASIK. Your eyes will need time to heal, and they will feel scratchy for a bit. Find a responsible driver who can take you to and from your Garden City, New York, eye surgeon’s office. The driver needs to show up with you for your appointment and wait for you to finish. The procedure doesn’t take long, so your driver won’t have to wait very long before he or she can take you home.
