LASIK surgery is well-known as a safe, effective way to permanently correct your vision. Even though its benefits have been proven time and time again, people remain afraid and apprehensive of LASIK surgery. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing! Taking precautions is important, especially when it comes to your vision. And, as we all know, all surgeries come with some associated risks.
Here at Stahl Eyecare, we want our patients to enter our office confident in their decision to improve their lives through LASIK surgery. We don’t think fear should hold you back from making a life-changing decision about your visual health. So, here are some reasons why you should not be afraid of LASIK surgery, but make an educated decision based on facts!
LASIK Surgery Has a Wildly Low Complication Rate
The complication rate associated with LASIK is exceedingly low. However, complications do happen. It is important to note that when we say “complication”, we are talking about serious occurrences like flap dislodgement, keratoconus, and infection. Side effects like dry eye syndrome and glare will typically resolve themselves and are not considered serious. Complications may require treatment with additional surgery or medication.
The truth is that, when LASIK complications do occur, treatments are available. There are, to date, no recorded cases of blindness due to LASIK.
You Won’t Feel Any Pain During or After Surgery
For many people, the surgery itself is the main deterrent. The thought of being awake while a blade or laser is cutting their eyes may be enough to scare most people off. But you shouldn’t worry about that! Your doctor will numb your eyes using a local anesthetic. You will not feel any pain during the procedure, only some mild discomfort when pressure is applied to the eye. In addition to numbing your eye, your doctor will prescribe you a mild oral sedative to take before the procedure. This should help a lot with your nerves.
You may experience some discomfort during healing, but you should not feel pain. Lubricating eye drops can be very helpful to manage the feeling of dry, itchy eyes.
Afraid of the Cost?
It’s no secret that LASIK surgery has a steep price tag. There are, of course, reasons for this. You are paying for the skill, modern technology, and customization that goes into your procedure. At Stahl, we understand that affording quality services can be difficult. That is why we work with our patients as much as we can to provide a plan that will work for them.
