If you’ve been following our blog, you already know that LASIK is affordable, corrects your vision (often higher than 20/20), and is safe and easy, but there are other ways LASIK affects your life as well. When you get LASIK, you’re improving your life experience, making every day a little better. We sat down with Sossy Vega, a student at Manhattanville College, who just got LASIK and can’t stop raving about it. Here are her top three reasons for getting the surgery, and the benefits she’s seen from the procedure.
Way #1: Confidence
“LASIK has really improved my confidence,” Sossy said. “When I pose for pictures, I always take off my glasses because I think I look better without them. I don’t have to do that anymore. When I used to go out with my friends, I would just go without my glasses on. Even though I couldn’t see so well, I just felt more comfortable. Now I feel great and love the way I look.”
Sossy elaborated on how it makes her feel more confident, and her experience during the procedure: “Ever since I was little I’ve worn glasses, and there are all sorts of embarrassing pictures of me with these huge frames. The day after the surgery, I could already feel the difference. I just felt so much better running around the city without my clunky frames. It’s made me more confident. I feel like I can take on the world.”
Way #2: Ease
Sossy said that one of the major ways LASIK improved her life was making everything a little easier. “It’s just nice to finally be able to buy and wear sunglasses without having to get prescription lenses. I used to always worry about losing my glasses, leaving them somewhere and having to buy new ones. I wrote my prescription down in case anything ever happened to them, and I had to carry it around with me everywhere.”
As someone who plays sports, Sossy has seen a big difference in her life. “Contacts irritate my eyes, so when I played volleyball, I used to have to run around with my glasses on my face, and I was always worried they’d fall off. I don’t have to worry about that anymore. A lot of people don’t realize this, but also, when you wear glasses, it makes it very difficult to see 3D movies. You have to find a way to balance the 3D glasses and your own glasses. It was really annoying, especially because I love 3D movies!”
Way #3: Health
Besides comfort and ease, Sossy identified one more area where her life has improved. “When you have bad vision, it’s like an illness. It’s like your eyes are sick. And the LASIK is the medication that makes you feel better. A lot of women in my family have degenerative vision problems, and have to get their prescription renewed often. With LASIK, I have 20/20 vision. At my regular eye exams, my doctor tells me that my eyes are wonderful. It’s been a few years now, but my eyes are still good as new.”
And as for advice for people considering LASIK? “I would absolutely recommend LASIK to anyone who wants better vision,” Sossy said. “It’s made a big difference on my life. I see better, feel better, and everything is just that much easier. It can be a little scary anytime you get a surgery, but it’s painless, fast, and definitely worth it. I would just say to stop thinking about it and do it!”
