Tonight marks an annual holiday tradition here in the city that never sleeps, as the tree at Rockefeller Center will be lit by 45,000 multi-colored LED lights. Millions will be watching as the tree is lit on their television screen across the world, and many people are lucky enough to be right where that action is, tonight!
The very first tree lighting took place back in 1933, and continues to be a staple tradition in New York City every year, this year being the 81st anniversary of the ceremony. Be sure to head out of the office early today and stop by Rockefeller Plaza (W48th to 51st Streets between 5th and 6th avenues) to see this iconic holiday event. This year’s 76-foot Norway Spruce is guaranteed to be a sight to see, not to mention the 550 pound Swarovski crystal star that will go on top!
The event includes musical performances, and smiles galore from native New Yorkers to people that have traveled from across the globe to see this famous holiday tradition. You can see the tree through January 7, so bring your loved ones, your friends, and visitors to share this piece of the city with you this year.
Get into the spirit, New York, for the holiday season is finally here!
